The 10 Commandments.
Many of our readers will be graduating from college, law school or medical school in May or June. Many others may be interviewing for summer internships at prestigious firms in the Tristate area, or elsewhere in the country. Following are some guidelines on how to dress for interviews for these gentlemen and for the rest of you as a l point of reference if and when you decide to change jobs in the future.
10 Commandments of Interviewing:
1. If possible, call ahead and determine expected attire
When in doubt, DRESS UP!
2. Be impeccably groomed- meaning:
a. Recent haircut- professional, up-to-date, but not trendy
b. Clean fingernails
c. Clean hands
d. Recent, close shave if you are clean shaven, or neatly trimmed facial hair if you have it
3. Polish and wear your best shoes. Match them with a DRESS belt
4. Wear inconspicuous socks that match closely to your trousers- solid or small pattern. Over-the-calf, no hairy legs when you cross them.
5. Wear a conservative gray or navy suit:
a. Absolutely no double-breasted or peak lapels to an interview
b. Instead wear a 2 or 3 button classic business suit with a medium gorge
c. Avoid pin stripes- this may be a mark of status and you don’t have any- yet
6. Add a crisply pressed WHITE shirt- point collar, length of points matches the shape of your face
7. Wear a conservative tie but not overly so- burgundy or gold for contrast with a small patterns, or a 2 or 3 color stripe
8. Don’t wear a large, ostentatious watch. Your interviewer might not think you need the job
10.Tone down the accessories- wear the pocket squares
and pinkie rings AFTER you get the job |
